| 'one-room'
schoolhouse - September 29, 2005 |
 |
Welcome to Pensacola's only one-room schoolhouse
building! (PCC has a one-room schoolhouse room inside). |
 |
We designed this building to house the collection of
signs about misleading information and blatant errors in public school
textbooks, and to contrast today's teaching with what was taught even
as recent as sixty years ago. |
 |
My original design called for two doors, one on each
side to mimic how many schoolhouses had one door for boys, one for
girls. For simplicity, and traffic flow, we went with one. |
 |
This is the old side, entitled, "THE WAY IT WAS."
Here are several of the recessed display cases. It took us
several days to make the cases. They are red oak trim, provincial
trim, and wallpapered inside with antique-looking newspaper ads and old
calligraphic writing. You can see the old Bible that the Myer
family is loaning to use. It is from 1871. I have my books,
"Democracy in America" and "Men of our Times" in there as well. |
 |
Here is the old wood stove (purely decorational).
On the wall we have notable quotes from famous Americans. Since
this picture, we have move the stove to where the bench is, to make
room for the teacher's desk which we bought from an unfinished wood
shop, and stained it to make the room. |
 |
Detail shot of one of the wall shelves. Even the
candy is old-timey soft peppermint sticks. The ink bottles were
ordered from a educational reenactment company. The hornbook is a
reproduction that we made. The set of McGuffey readers is on loan
from the Myer family as well. |
 |
Here is the other corner. This corner has more
fyi facts about schoolhouse life, as well as relevant quotes from
university presidents and founders regarding Christianity and religion. |
 |
This is the modern side, "THE WAY IT IS". |
 |
"WHAT CAN PARENTS DO?" This is the foyer, where
information about what parents can do is located. The traffic
flow goes inside to the old side, to the new side, and then exists by
walking through the foyer. On the other wall (not visible) we
have another wall sign about homeschooling, tips, and FAQs. |
 |
Here are the display cases on the modern side.
They have recent public school textbooks open to the pages showing
information that was disproven long ago. I still have a couple of
signs to make for this wall. |
