"Character"
Daniel Valles

READ Titus 2:1-8

As humans, we have differences in age, gender, size, etc. As Christians, we are all of one body, however, we have different responsibilities as well. As we progress in age throughout life, our Christian responsibilities are added to. This is a short study of the different responsibilities by gender and age.

Everyone.
"Speak thou the things which become sound doctrine." vs. 1
"...in all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned." vs. 7-8a.

Older Men
"be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience." vs. 2
(grave: to be venerated for character, honourable)
(temperate: curbing one’s desires and impulses vs. doing what feels good and not caring)
(charity: brotherly love vs. humanity's bitterness in old age)

Older Women
same as the older men - vs. 3a.
"in behaviour as becometh holiness [reverent toward holy men and things], not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things." (vs. 3b)
Matthew Henry best sums this verse by saying, ""Those whose actions and behaviour become holiness are thereby teachers of good things; and, besides this, they may and should also teach by doctrinal instruction at home, and in a private way."

Young Women
"teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands" vs. 4-5. I find it interesting that it is a learned trait to love others. Human nature has us love ourselves, whereas Godly love is toward others. Young adults need to learn to be sober and grave instead of rash and impetuous.

Young Men
"Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded."
(sober minded: to be in one’s right mind, to put a moderate estimate upon one’s self, think of one’s self soberly, to curb one’s passions)

As we look over this list that the Bible provides for our benefit, where do we stand? Are we slack in certain areas? Sound doctrine? Sober minded? Loving? Discreet? Sound speech? These are the characteristics that should describe you at the various stages of life. The world portrays a different lifestyle opposite of what the Bible outlines for the different ages and genders. Remember, Christ is watching our testimony more than anyone else. Seek His favor first of all and in all.
