"Comforter"

READ Psalm 34:18

What a wonderful comforter we have in Christ! Many times we go through trials and difficulties that make us feel as though we have been cut off at the knees. When all of our earthly consolations fail, when all friends and family seem distant, what hope do the children of Christ have? We have the hope and assurance that He is near those of a broken heart. The word 'nigh' has the idea of the closeness found in kinship. Just like small children run to their earthly parents during thunderstorms, so we can find refuge in the arms of Christ.

It is interesting that the two qualifications that need to be present are a broken heart and a contrite spirit. A contrite spirit means that our view of self is in its proper perspective. We, by ourselves, are nothing and can do nothing. When we think of ourselves in a prideful manner, we sometimes get to the point where we do not accept help or think that we need it.

When we come to the end of our rope, and realize that we can do nothing but depend on God, we can go running to Him, and He hears and draws nigh. When small children get frightened during storms, sometimes they will just stay petrified in bed and cry out for their parents. The loving parents come, turn on the light, and comfort the frightened child. When we get scared, broken, and crushed, all we need to do is call out to the one who can save and heal.
