"Comforting"
There are many times in life that we are cast down. Burdens bearing heavy on us for days and weeks bring us to a point, sometimes, where we feel cast down. Paul, in his missionary journeys was familiar with these feelings. Stonings, beatings, shipwrecks, etc. all took a physical toll. True, his eyes were on a heavenly goal, and that is what he took hope in; but, it still ached and hurt to endure what he went through. In the verse, however, he points out that God doth comfort those that are cast down. If find two important keys in this verse that are necessary if we are to receive comforting from God. Firstly, comforting comes from God - not alcohol, drugs, foods, hobbies, or activities. Many people in the world have various ideas of drowning their problems. Turn to God in your cast down hours, and He will provide the perfect comforting. In this case, God sent Titus to comfort Paul. Fellowship with believers can be very encouraging, uplifting, and strengthening. Paul often wrote that he desired to see one of the brethren. Do you you know someone who is cast down? Visit them and encourage them in the Lord. Bring some cookies or cake, a devotional or something you found in God's Word, and sit together on Heaven's front porch. When we give of our time for others, often we will find that we, too, are lifted from the valleys.
