"Plea for Strength" Daniel Valles
In these verses, David cries out to the Lord that he needs help and preparation before temptations come. He knew that he was susceptible to certain temptations, and so asked for help and strength in those areas. He specifically asked that the Lord will help him with his speech. That he would know what needs to be said, when it needs to be said, and when it should also remain unsaid. If you remember his actions in I Samuel 25:13, you see that (in his wrath) he rallied up his men to slaughter the household of Nabal; but, fortunately, Abigail placated his anger. As a king, and especially as a man of war, he could do a lot of damage with just words. He also asked the Lord to create in him a distaste for evil things and men. As Christians, we too need to ask God to make our stomach sour at the wickedness in our society. When Satan tempts us to do wrong, even though it looks like a dainty that everyone else is enjoying, we need to have the God-given reaction of abhorring evil and sin. Be prepared spiritually. Examine your life and weaknesses, and ask for specific help in specific areas. Also, ask that God will give you the proper attitude to sin, and those that reveal in it. You will find that the more time you spend in God's Word, the appealing dainties of Satan's world quickly lose their appeal. |
