"Continue"
In these verses, we see plainly that in the last times deception and evil men will proliferate, and exponentially grow worse and worse. Even the verse above it (12) states that "all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution." This does not paint a very rosy picture so far. On one hand, it prepares us mentally for what is coming. Expect it. Do not be shocked that depraved people do depraved things. Instead of trying to grasp how someone can do such wickedness, concentrate on what the next verse instructs us to do: Continue. "Continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them." (14) As Christians, we have the Word of God to instruct us in doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness (vs. 16). We have everything we need to know for life in this one Book. All we have to do is remember to 'stick to the book.' God says, when evil times comes, when men reject God, when the world seems to be darkening all around us... continue in what I have taught you. Fear God, keep His commandments, eschew evil, depend on Him, and do everything He has commanded you. By now, you should be thinking, "Do I know what to continue in?" If you have not studied the Scriptures, have not taken time each week and day to read God's Word, how can you continue in what you have not instructed yourself with? How can you be sure you are correct, without His correction, or how can call yourself righteous, if you do not receive His Instruction in righteousness. Read the word. Mediate on it. Continue. |
