THIS WEEK'S VERSE
----------------------------------------------------------
Jesus told His disciples in John 9:5, "As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."  Jesus made this statement to His disciples shortly before His crucifixion.  Later, it would be shown that the torch was passed to us.  Philippians 2:15 says, "That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world."  While Christ was here on earth, activities, miracles, people, etc. all pointed to Christ.  They were drawn to His light, or repulsed by it.  John the Baptists' job was to point out that Light, and prepare the way for His coming.  The disciples job, while He was here, was to learn from Him, and to bring others to Him.

Christ pointed out a crucial principle that affects us everyday of our lives in John 11:9-10.  He states, "I any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world."  Relating that in principle, when we as Christians keep our eyes on Christ, the Light of the world, we can have clear direction as we walk through life.  It is when we take our eyes off of Christ, and start trying to use our own wisdom without Him, that we stumble.  Keep in the Word.  His Word is a light unto our path.  The more we walk without the light, the more we will stumble and slip.  Do not rely on others to shine ambient light into your life's path.   Get it straight from the source.   Christ - the light of the world.

MISCELLANEOUS THOUGHTS
---------------------------------------------------------

Here is a great thought I found in the booklet "Daniel Nash: Prevailing Prince of Prayer" by J. Paul Reno.  (Published by Revival Literature P.O. Box 6068 Asheville, NC 28816, pg. 15):  "We refuse to so strive [in prayer] and should be surprised at the lack of God's mighty stirrings.  It is not amazing that we have no problem with people wearing themselves out in sports for pleasure, work for money, politics for power, and programs for charity, but think it fanatical to so pray for souls?  We would die for national freedom, but never for progress in the Kingdom of God.  Is it any wonder we see so little of God's great working?"

Excerpt from Charles Haddon Spurgeon's "Feeding Sheep or Amusing Goats?":
My first contention is that providing amusement for the people is nowhere spoken of in the Scriptures as a function of the church.  If it is a Christian work, why did not Christ speak of it? "Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15).  That is clear enough.  So it would have been if He had added, "and provide amusement for those who do not relish the gospel." No such words, however, are to be found.  It did not seem to occur to him."

CURRENT EVENT RECAP
------------------------------------------------------
Recently, more and more news articles are starting to show the ripple effect that the Israeli-Palestinian-Iraq conflict has on the world.  What affects one, affects the other.  This is primarily because of the religious aspect of the conflicts.  Muslims in both situations are increasingly becoming irate over what they see as roughshod US tactics to humiliate them and show bias in mediating between Palestine and Israel.  The ripple effect then spreads the hatred to Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia, etc.

As the attacks in Saudi Arabia increase, the US dependence and vulnerability in the area of oil is highlighted.  We are extremely dependent on Saudi Arabia, and yet the instability in the ruling families and the increasing terrorist attacks is bringing the US to a dangerous precipice.  With Venezuela experiencing recall and political questions, that source of oil is also not reliable as a backup if Saudi Arabia experiences a devastating attack on one of the five vulnerable points in it's distribution pipeline.  Such an attack will take enormous effort to repair.  The terrorist groups active in that country know and tout our dependence on oil, and that is why they are attacking it and foreigners so aggressively.

The ripple effect is spreading, and certain Muslim groups in Iran are now publicly gathering suicide bombers to attack in Iraq and Israel.  It would be interesting to take the 'temperature' of Muslim groups in Europe and the US.

The latest Satan/witchcraft/sorcery-promoting movie Harry Potter is reveling in unprecedented success in Britain.

Homosexuality is making more headlines as we draw deeper akin to the days of Noah and Lot.  In France, the issue of same-sex marriages is sparking debate, while Philadelphia is now promoting itself as a homosexual travel destination.  We must remember that Jeremiah 49:18 says, "As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it."  God destroyed several cities - not just two.  These were not just towns, they were cities.  Perhaps the other cities did nothing - guilty by silence and toleration.

In life issues, the Terri Shiavo case is heading to the FL Supreme Court to overturn Gov. Bush's order, and a federal judge ruling in the partial-birth abortion ban, recently stated that a woman's right to abortion is more important than whether the child experiences pain.  Also, more and more bills pushing for stem cell research and funding are gaining footholds.  Life, in America, is increasingly loosing value.

China and Hong Kong are clashing over the issue of democracy, as China uses heavy-handed techniques to bring H.K. into the Communist fold.  China is not a friendly country that has reformed.  Their human-rights are scant, yet continues to be overlooked by trading nations.
